How to access Socrative
Hi,
As you know, we have been taking online quizzes via a site called "Socrative." These quizzes are taken for a grade. I can only keep one quiz active at any given time. I am leaving the quiz that we took in class active until the weekend (at least). If you would like to retake any of the online quizzes after this, then you will have to email me (mid.error@gmail.com) so that I can activate that particular quiz for you.
Here is the information to access those quizzes:
- Go to "www.socrative.com"
- Click on STUDENT LOGIN
- For the Class ID# enter: 32791D64
- Enter your name
You will then be allowed to take whatever quiz is active at that time.
As a reminder, for fill in the blank questions, type in your responses with one space between each "blank."
Thanks,
Randy

Announcement
Hi,
I just posted the video for Spleen 1 through 10 (below). (We did not cover Spleen 10 yet.)
We are experimenting with this new format of online quizzes. I will give the quiz online tomorrow in class (via Socrative). After about 15 minutes, I will examine the results, and go over any questions which seem to have been problematic for many students.
After class, you will have the option of taking the quiz online again, to improve your score. I will take the best score on record for your grade.
This week, I did not create a Proprofs quiz for you to practice with (and I cannot find an old version of the quiz). I apologize for this. Please try to study Spleen 1 through 9, and be prepared to take the quiz on it tomorrow, to the best of your ability. Again, you will have a few days afterwards to retake the quiz and improve your score.
Thanks,
Randy

Announcement
Hi everyone,
There will be NO GRADED QUIZ for today's class.
I will first go over Stomach 13 through 45, addressing any questions you might have.
Then, I will be administering an ONLINE QUIZ (using a website called Socrative), but it will be used for formative purposes (that is, it is for me to know what I need to teach or reteach). To take this quiz, you will need a computer with online connection. I assume that the long distance learners have this (in order to see our classes). If you are coming to ICAOM and you do NOT have a computer, then we can probably accommodate you by using one of the library laptops.
After this, I will address any problems that I see from the results of the online quiz by reteaching.
If we do NOT get to the Spleen channel, then that will be fine. I actually intended to spend a fair amount of time on the Stomach channel, especially since it is such a long channel.
Again, thanks for your patience. I want to make sure you all have a firm grasp of this channel before proceeding.
Thanks,
Randy

Apologies, Updates
Hello everyone,
I'm sorry if there was a mix-up regarding last class.
I understand that the class finished the entire Stomach channel (a huge feat!). Despite assurances that you were ready for that quiz, I am going to forego administering a quiz, and instead do a review of the entire Stomach channel at the next class. I will then try to administer an ONLINE quiz of the Stomach channel in class, so I can see if there are any topics we need to re-cover.
After that, we can proceed on with the Spleen.

| This was the first picture I drew, depicting the relationship between the PRIMARY CHANNELS, the LUO COLLATERALS, and the EXTRAORDINARY VESSELS. |

| This is the second picture I drew, depicting a way to imagine one of the functions of the Lungs. The Lungs descend and disperse qi and water throughout the body, sort of like an umbrella. |

Syllabus
Syllabus
Course Title/No: Acupoints 1/A101
Credits/Hours: 3/45
Prerequisites: None
Instructor: Randy K. Otaka
Day/Time: Wednesdays, 5:00-7:00
Required Texts:
“A Manual of Acupuncture” by Peter Deadman and Mazin Al-Khafaji with Kevin Baker
Recommended Texts:
“The Practical Applications of Meridian Style Acupuncture” by John E. Pirog
“Grasping the Wind” by Andrew Ellis, Nigel Wiseman, and Ken Boss
Purpose: This course introduces students to fundamental aspects of the acupoints of the first six channels (Lung, Large Intestine, Stomach, Spleen, Heart, Small Intestine) and two extraordinary vessel channels (Ren and Du). Emphasis is placed upon point location, although related issues such as point names and point classes will also be discussed.
Objectives: Introduce students to the practice of point location. This in turn involves:
- acquaintance with anatomical structures and anatomical directions.
- acquaintance with common cun measurements.
The Course Blog:
I have placed this course online, on a blog. This provides an accessible, consistent source of all documentation for the course. If a student happens to miss a course, s/he can access a version of class notes online.
A second reason for utilizing a blog is that it conveniently allows access to different teaching media. In this class, I will be utilizing video to help students, particularly with practical tasks such as point location. These video files will be accessible on the blog. I will also post online quizzes on the blog. These quizzes can serve as practice for the actual (graded) quizzes.
A third reason is that the blog provides a (possible) medium of communication and exchange of information.
The address of the blog is:
icaomacupoints1fall2016.blogspot.com
Presently, all materials of the blog are open and accessible to anyone. If students wish to close access to the blog, then everyone who wishes to use the blog must create and submit a valid gmail account.
NOTE: All content in the blog should be respectful and encouraging.
